Examples

Inviting participation from web visitors

The Friends of Recovery website features a page which allows visitors to share their personal stories of addiction and recovery.

United Academics hosts an online searchable database of salaries of UVM employees (which UA obtains as public information).

Using print and email to draw visitors

webSkillet worked with UE Vermont to design a web-based component for a mobilization. The promotion of the mobilization, on November 1st, included the easy-to-remember web page www.uevermont.org/nov1 (no longer up). Through emails, distribution of leaflets and phone calls, the UE encouraged its members and allies to sign an online pledge to be at the event, and the web page included background information on the issues behind the mobilization. Not only was there excellent turnout for the event, but visits to the website increased dramatically during the mobilization, and remained high afterwards.

The Vermont Workers' Center site features online registration system for events. The XML-based system is highly flexible in terms of being able to collect different information (i.e., workshop selections, background questions) for different events. Registration information is saved in a database, and downloadable in Excel-compatible format. For events with registration fees, the system also allows participants to pay securely online with a credit card (using PayPal). For a January 2008 conference, promoted through regular emails and mailings, the Center had over 150 online registrations.

Web-based data collection

United Academics used a webSkillet-programmed online survey to consult their members about bargaining priorities. Information from completed surveys was automatically stored in a database. Leaders of the organization were able to view various statistical summaries of the information, as well as individual survey responses, in a password-protected online environment. When the survey period was completed, all information was downloaded into an Excel-compatible format.

Friends of Recovery - Vermont (FOR-VT) hired webSkillet to program two online data collection systems: one to survey individual participants in recovery centers and one for recovery centers to submit monthly reports to the central network. In each case, the information is stored in a password-protected area of the website, where FOR-VT staff can view summaries of the information, sorted by center, quarter or year, and can download the data into an Excel-compatible format.
